Google made its AI answers link out more. On October 15, 2026 it added more inline links inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, started testing a section that surfaces official sites, and expanded news carousels to more countries. For a small business, being the obvious official source for your own services is now worth real clicks.
What exactly did Google change on October 15?
Google increased the number of links inside its AI answers and moved them higher up the response. In a post on the Google blog dated October 15, 2026, VP of Product Management Hema Budaraju announced four changes: more inline links embedded in the words of an AI response; a new section at the top of some responses highlighting official pages for a specific task; news carousels for timely queries expanding to more locations and languages; and related-article links at the end of responses now shown with image thumbnails in what Google calls a "more clickable design." A fifth change, reported by Search Engine Land on the same date, is a test in AI Mode where clicking a video creator’s or publisher’s name opens their Google Search profile.
The stated goal, in Google’s words, is to make exploring the web "simpler, more visual, and more engaging." The practical effect is that an AI answer is becoming less of a dead end and more of a set of doorways.
Why do more links in AI answers matter for a small business?
Because the main complaint about AI answers — that they answer the question and keep the click — just got slightly less true. If Google is showing more links, placing them higher, and testing a dedicated block for official sites, then the pages that read like the authoritative source for a specific job have more chances to be the link that gets tapped.
This does not mean AI search sends the traffic a blue link used to. It means the gap narrowed, and the way you earn a place in an AI answer is the way you earn a citation anywhere: answer one specific question directly, on a page that is obviously yours, with details a model can lift. "We repair front-load washers across Durham Region, same-day, $129 diagnostic" is extractable. "Quality service you can trust" is not. That is the whole job of SEO now.
What is the "official site" section, and can my business get into it?
It is a block at the top of some AI responses that points to official pages, and Google says it is still a test. Per Google’s October 15, 2026 post, it appears "when only a few official sites offer a task or specific information," with context on why each link is useful. Google has not published eligibility criteria or a signup, so nobody can promise you a place in it.
What you can control is whether your business is unmistakably the official source for its own name, services, locations and prices: one canonical page per service, name and address matching your Google Business Profile exactly, and booking, pricing and service-area details on your own domain rather than only in a third-party directory.
What are Preferred Sources, and should I care?
Preferred Sources lets a searcher pick the sites they want to see more of in Top Stories and, now, in the news carousels inside AI answers. Google said in its October 15, 2026 post that the number of people using Preferred Sources has grown "more than 7x since the start of the year." Google’s Nick Fox said at the December 2025 global rollout that when someone selects a preferred source, "they click to that site twice as often" — a doubling, with no finer figure given.
That rollout reached English-language users worldwide in December 2025, Canada included. For most local service businesses this is a minor lever, because Preferred Sources leans toward news publishers. If you publish useful content on a schedule, it is worth telling your email list they can add you.
What changed, and what should you actually do about it?
| What Google changed (Oct 15, 2026) | Status | What it means for your site |
|---|---|---|
| More inline links, placed higher in AI responses | Rolling out | Direct answers on your own pages have more chances to be the clicked link |
| Section at the top highlighting official sites | Testing, no eligibility published | Be the unmistakable official source for your services, prices and locations |
| News carousels for timely queries | Expanding to more locations and languages | Mostly relevant if you publish dated, newsworthy content |
| Related-article links with thumbnails | Rolling out | Images on content pages now carry more weight in the click decision |
| Creator and publisher names clickable in AI Mode | Testing | Video routes through Google profile pages, not your site |
How should you measure whether any of this is working?
Watch impressions and clicks separately in Google Search Console, and watch branded and direct traffic in analytics. AI answers usually show up as flat or falling clicks against steady impressions, plus more people arriving later by searching your name. Track leads — calls, forms, bookings — rather than sessions.
What to do this week
- Pick your three money questions — the ones customers actually ask before they buy — and give each one its own page with the answer in the first 50 words, no preamble.
- Make your service pages unmistakably official: exact business name, address and phone matching your Google Business Profile, one canonical URL per service, and real prices or price ranges where you can publish them.
- Add numbers and dates to your claims. "Same-day service in Durham Region, $129 diagnostic, updated October 2026" is extractable. "Fast, friendly service" is not.
- Set a Search Console baseline today for impressions, clicks and average position on your top 10 queries, so you can tell in January whether the October changes moved anything for you.
Frequently asked questions
Will Google’s October 2026 update send more traffic to my small business website?
Possibly a little, but nobody can promise it. Google added more inline links to AI Mode and AI Overviews on October 15, 2026 and moved them higher in the response, creating more chances for a click than before. Google published no traffic estimate alongside the change, so any specific percentage you see quoted is somebody’s guess. Expect a modest improvement for pages that answer one question clearly, and no change at all for thin pages.
Do I need to do anything technical to appear in the new official site section?
No, because there is nothing to apply for. Google describes the section as a test that appears when only a few official sites offer a specific task or piece of information, and has published no eligibility rules or submission process. The useful work is unglamorous: one canonical page per service, consistent business name and address, accurate contact and pricing details on your own domain, and valid structured data.
Should I stop investing in SEO because AI answers summarise everything?
No — and the October 2026 changes are a reasonable argument against it. Google is adding links back into AI answers, not removing them, and the pages that win those links are the same ones that win ordinary rankings: specific, current, well structured, obviously owned by a real business. What should change is your measurement. Track leads and calls rather than sessions, and expect more customers to find you in an AI answer and arrive by searching your name.
