AI Overviews Now Hit 88% of Buying Searches

AI Overviews now appear on 88% of commercial keywords, up from 45.75% a year earlier, according to a Semrush study published 21 October 2026. The searches customers run right before buying almost always show an AI answer first. Your job is no longer to rank tenth — it is to be the business that answer quotes.

Why are AI Overviews suddenly on almost every buying search?

Because Google expanded them fastest on exactly the searches with money attached. Semrush tracked 400 US commercial keywords on desktop every month from September 2025 to August 2026, across banking, software and e-commerce. Keyword-weighted AI Overview coverage went from 45.75% to 88% over those twelve months. Weighted by search volume, coverage hit 97.08% by August 2026.

Two caveats matter. This is US desktop data, not Canadian, and Semrush says so plainly. And the study counts whether an AI Overview appeared, not what happened to clicks or sales afterwards — it is a map of where the AI answer now sits, not a measurement of lost revenue.

Which searches did AI Overviews take over fastest?

Review and comparison searches — the ones closest to a purchase decision. Semrush split its keyword set into five modifier groups, and the growth was uneven in a way that tells you where to spend your effort.

"Reviews" grew the most, nearly 59 points. "Best X for Y" ended highest at 96.12%. By industry, e-commerce climbed from 32.62% to 85.11%, software reached roughly 91% and banking roughly 89%.

"Best appliance repair in Burnaby", "cheapest eye exam Scarborough", "broker A vs broker B" — those are the shapes Google has decided an AI answer belongs on.

Does an AI Overview mean you lose the click?

Not automatically — but it changes who gets it. An AI Overview cites a handful of sources, and those citations are now the clickable real estate. Semrush’s own example is instructive: for "mailchimp vs klaviyo", the AI Overview cited Zapier and a YouTube video alongside the brands themselves. The page that got quoted was a third party that had written a clear comparison, not either company’s homepage.

That is the opening for a small business. You are not competing on domain size for a citation. You are competing on whether your page answers the specific question in a form a machine can lift out cleanly.

What actually gets a small business cited in an AI Overview?

Pages that answer one question directly, in the first two sentences, with a number and a date attached. Everything else is downstream of that.

In practice, four things do the work. First, a page per real question, with the question as the H1 and the answer as the opening paragraph — not a 2,000-word "ultimate guide" that buries it. Second, tables. Comparison and key-facts tables get extracted far more reliably than the same information written as prose. Third, named sources and dates inside the sentence, because an AI answer engine is choosing what it can safely attribute. Fourth, structured data — FAQ and LocalBusiness markup, and a Google Business Profile that is actually filled in.

None of that is new SEO advice. What is new is the reward: a page like that used to win position four, and now it wins the citation slot sitting above position one. Auditing which pages are shaped to be quoted is the first thing we do in our SEO service.

What else changed in search this week?

Three things worth knowing, all reported by Search Engine Roundtable on 23 October 2026 unless noted.

Google is testing AI-generated summary snippets inside the source cards next to AI Overviews. If that ships, the text Google writes about your page — not the title you wrote — is what a searcher reads before clicking.

Google Universal Cart went live in the US across Search and the Gemini app, which TechCrunch reported on 15 October 2026. It lets a shopper buy from several merchants in one cart. If you sell products online, Merchant Center feed accuracy is now a storefront. It has not launched in Canada yet.

And Google is testing a rebuilt Business Profile performance section, with engagement, review, search trend and audience metrics — free reporting worth reading monthly.

What to do this week

  1. List your ten money searches and check them manually. Search each one, in an incognito window, from the city you serve. Note which ones show an AI Overview and who it cites. That list is your actual competitive set now.
  2. Fix the top three pages so the answer comes first. Move the direct answer into the opening two sentences. Add a comparison or key-facts table. Put the source and date in the sentence, not a footnote.
  3. Build the review and comparison pages you do not have. "Reviews" and "best X for Y" searches are where coverage grew fastest. If you have no page addressing those for your own category, you cannot be cited on them.
  4. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile reporting. Check whether the new performance section has reached your account, and set a monthly reminder to read it.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI Overviews appear on Canadian searches as often as US ones?

We do not have an equivalent Canadian dataset. The Semrush study published 21 October 2026 measured US desktop searches only, and says so. In our own day-to-day work on Ontario and BC accounts, AI Overviews show up on commercial searches constantly, but that is observation, not a measured coverage rate. Treat 88% as a directional signal for Canada rather than a Canadian figure, and check your own key searches manually from the city you serve.

Should I stop investing in SEO if AI answers the question first?

No — the investment shifts rather than disappears. Being cited in an AI Overview requires the same underlying assets as ranking: a crawlable page, a clear answer, real expertise, structured data, credible sources. What changes is page shape. One question per page, answered in the first two sentences, with a table and dated sources, beats a long general guide. Businesses that abandon SEO now hand the citation slot to a competitor who did the work.

How do I know if my page was used in an AI Overview?

There is no clean report for it yet. The practical method is manual: search your money keywords from the location you serve and read the citation cards. Pair that with Google Search Console impressions — a page gaining impressions while losing clicks is often being read inside an AI answer rather than visited. Track it monthly, not daily, because the results move around a lot.

Does FAQ schema still help in 2026?

Yes, though not the way it did in 2021. Google removed FAQ rich results from most listings years ago, so do not expect the expandable accordion. The markup still tells search engines and AI answer engines which question each block of text answers, and that is what gets matched when an answer is assembled. Add it to clarify structure, not to win a visual snippet.
