No — not yet, and not directly. ChatGPT ads are running in Canada, but OpenAI has no self-serve buying tool, and the one programmatic route that opened this month, through Amazon’s DSP, is United States only. For a small business the useful move right now is getting cited inside ChatGPT answers, not buying space beside them.
Can a small business buy ChatGPT ads today?
No. There is no ads manager you can log into and no published price list.
OpenAI confirmed in its own post, "Testing ads in ChatGPT," that the test runs for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers only. Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers see no ads at all, and users under 18 are excluded. OpenAI expanded the test from the United States to Canada, Australia and New Zealand in March 2026, so Canadian customers are already seeing these units — you simply cannot buy one on your own.
Access so far has been invite-only. Media.Monks reported in September 2026 that early access looks aimed at large direct-to-consumer brands in retail and travel, with media commitments reported in the seven figures. Treat that number as unconfirmed — OpenAI has published neither pricing nor an application process.
What did Amazon’s DSP pilot actually change?
It created the first real buying route into ChatGPT for advertisers who are not in OpenAI’s invite list — but only in the US.
Search Engine Land reported on September 10, 2026 that Amazon has begun piloting ChatGPT ad inventory inside Amazon DSP, letting American advertisers extend campaigns into conversational placements without dealing with OpenAI directly. The pilot supports cost-per-click and CPM buying. The formats are text and image units beneath the organic ChatGPT answer, carrying sponsored labels, plus product feed ads that generate assets automatically from an advertiser’s catalogue. Delta Vacations was named as one of the pilot advertisers.
The division of labour matters: Amazon handles campaign buying and optimisation, while OpenAI keeps control of where the ad appears and whether it appears at all. Reporting covers impressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM and CPC — aggregate numbers, not the keyword-level detail a Google Ads account gives you.
For a Toronto shop, the practical read is simple. A channel your customers already use has opened to advertisers, the door is US-first, and a Canadian version will likely follow the same pattern Google and Meta used: large accounts first, self-serve later.
How is a ChatGPT ad different from a Google Search ad?
Fewer slots, thinner competition, far less control.
| ChatGPT ads (Sept 2026) | Google Search ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can buy | Invite-only; US advertisers via Amazon DSP pilot | Anyone, self-serve, any budget |
| Available in Canada | Ads shown to Canadian users since March 2026; no Canadian buying route announced | Yes |
| Ad units per query | Maximum one per prompt | Up to four above results |
| Buying models | CPC and CPM (Amazon DSP pilot) | CPC, target CPA, target ROAS, Max conversions |
| Reporting detail | Aggregated impressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM, CPC | Keyword, search term, asset and audience level |
| Placement control | OpenAI decides delivery and placement | Advertiser controls campaign, match type, negatives |
Two figures from Search Engine Land’s September 14, 2026 analysis are worth holding on to. ChatGPT serves a maximum of one ad unit per prompt, against Google’s four above the results, so inventory is genuinely scarce. And competition is currently thin — one advertiser, BestMoney, accounted for 13.56% of all ChatGPT ads observed in that analysis. Thin auctions usually mean cheap clicks, right up until they do not.
Will this change my cost per lead?
Not this quarter, and probably not next.
The audience overlap is the reason. Search Engine Land cited SimilarWeb data on September 14, 2026 showing that only 5% of ChatGPT’s audience does not also use Google. Almost everyone asking ChatGPT about furnace repair or mortgage rates is already reachable on Google Search, where you can buy them today, at a bid you control, with search-term data you can act on.
So the risk is not that ChatGPT ads steal your leads. The risk is spending attention on a channel you cannot buy while your Google Ads account drifts. If you want that account tightened before the next ad channel arrives, that is what our Google Ads management work covers.
What to do this week
- Ask ChatGPT what it says about your category. Type the question a customer would ask — "best appliance repair in Mississauga" — and note which businesses get named. That answer, not the ad slot, is what is moving buyers right now.
- Fix the pages those answers pull from. Clear service and pricing pages, a current Google Business Profile, and real reviews are what AI assistants quote. Vague copy does not get cited.
- Register interest, then forget about it. OpenAI collects advertiser sign-ups at openai.com/advertisers. Add your name, set a calendar note for January, and do not restructure anything around a channel with no Canadian buying route.
- Spend the freed-up budget on search terms. Pull your search terms report and add negatives. That reliably lowers cost per lead this month; ChatGPT ads will not.
Frequently asked questions
Are ChatGPT ads available in Canada?
Canadian users have been seeing them since March 2026, when OpenAI expanded its advertising test beyond the United States to Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Buying them is a different question. OpenAI has not announced a Canadian buying route, and the Amazon DSP pilot reported by Search Engine Land on September 10, 2026 is open to US advertisers only. So your customers may see ChatGPT ads; you cannot yet place one.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
OpenAI has published no pricing. The Amazon DSP pilot supports cost-per-click and CPM buying, but no rate card has been released. Media.Monks reported in September 2026 that early participants faced media commitments in the seven figures, which is unconfirmed and clearly aimed at national brands rather than businesses spending $500 to $10,000 a month.
Should I move budget out of Google Ads because of AI search?
Not on this news. Only 5% of ChatGPT’s audience does not overlap with Google’s, according to SimilarWeb data cited by Search Engine Land on September 14, 2026, so the same buyers remain reachable through search campaigns you can actually control and measure. Shift budget when a channel proves cheaper leads in your own account, not when a platform ships a feature.
Who sees ads inside ChatGPT?
Logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers, per OpenAI’s own announcement. Paying Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers see no ads, and under-18 accounts are excluded. That matters if you sell to businesses: a meaningful share of professional ChatGPT users sit on paid tiers and will never see an ad unit at all.
