ChatGPT Ads has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate with tens of thousands of advertisers, according to a Graphite and Similarweb report covered by Search Engine Land on September 29, 2026. For most Canadian small businesses it is a small test budget, not a Google Ads replacement — Google still carries far more paid volume.
What actually happened with ChatGPT Ads this week?
A joint study from Graphite and Similarweb gave the first real look at how advertisers are using ads inside ChatGPT, and the numbers are bigger than most owners expect.
The researchers analysed more than 98,000 ads and 8,000 landing pages, with the U.S. portion covering 95,000-plus ads from 500-plus advertisers collected between April 1 and August 16, 2026. Search Engine Land reported the findings on September 29, 2026.
Three figures matter if you buy ads for a living or for your own shop. First, 43% of ad-eligible ChatGPT users in the U.S. had already seen an ad within six months — that is U.S. data, not Canadian. Second, click-through rates have roughly doubled since launch. Third, the channel is at a $1 billion annualized run rate — real money, still a rounding error next to Google Search.
The study’s own conclusion is the one to hold on to: ChatGPT advertising is behaving as an incremental channel, not a Google Search replacement.
Is ChatGPT Ads worth it for a small business in Canada?
For most owners spending under $10,000 a month, the honest answer this quarter is "a small test, once your Google Ads account is actually tight."
Access is not the blocker. ChatGPT Ads opened to Canadian advertisers in April 2026 alongside Australia and New Zealand, and self-service buying has since widened to more than 50 countries, according to Digital Applied’s market availability tracker. Early minimum spends from resale partners have come down sharply over the year.
The blocker is measurement. The same report found advertisers are still working out creative and attribution, and the demand pool is nothing like Search. A plumber in Durham Region gets a known quantity of commercial-intent searches every month on Google. Nobody can yet tell you the equivalent number inside an AI assistant.
There is also a cost-of-attention argument. We ran a GTA mortgage brokerage at 1,113 leads a month at $7.69 per lead in August 2026 — on ordinary Google Search and Meta campaigns, not anything exotic. If your cost per lead is nowhere near that, the money is better spent fixing your existing Google Ads management than chasing a channel that cannot yet report back cleanly.
How is advertising in ChatGPT different from Google Search ads?
The mechanics rhyme, but the creative and the intent signal do not.
| Factor | Google Search Ads | ChatGPT Ads (as of Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Intent signal | A typed keyword with known monthly volume | A conversation turn; volume not publicly reported |
| Creative reuse | Existing RSAs usually transfer across campaigns | Top advertisers write 98% new copy for the channel |
| Formats | Text, Shopping, Performance Max asset groups | Sponsored answer cards, product spotlights, sidebar units |
| Landing pages | Often dozens, mapped to ad groups | Most advertisers use five or fewer |
| Measurement maturity | Well-established conversion tracking | Still being worked out by early advertisers |
| Scale | Dominant share of paid search volume | $1B annualized run rate; incremental channel |
The creative point is the one owners underestimate. Pasting your Google headlines into a new channel is the fastest way to waste a test budget. Graphite and Similarweb found the top performers build messaging around the use cases people are actually discussing in their conversations, and that ads appearing in early conversation turns earn the strongest click-through rates.
What does this mean for your Google Ads budget right now?
Nothing dramatic — and that is the point of an industry update rather than a panic.
The rest of the week’s changes were ordinary platform maintenance with real consequences. Google Ads added IP address and timestamp matching to Customer Match on September 25, 2026, per Search Engine Land, which raises match rates and also raises a privacy question worth asking your agency about before you upload another customer list. Amazon Ads began working with Yelp to turn product purchases into local service leads, reported September 29, 2026. And Google is testing a grid layout for sponsored products that looks more like organic listings, noted in Search Engine Roundtable’s September 30, 2026 recap.
Q4 is the actual deadline. Search Engine Land’s September 29 piece on Q4 readiness makes the same point we make to every client in October: conversion tracking, product feeds and margin maths need to be right before spend climbs, because a tracking gap in November costs far more than it does in July.
What to do this week
- Audit conversion tracking before Q4 spend rises. Fire a test lead and confirm it lands in Google Ads, your CRM and your inbox. Do this before you raise budgets, not after.
- Ask who touches your customer lists. With IP and timestamp matching now in Customer Match, decide deliberately what data you upload and get it in writing with whoever runs your account.
- Cap any ChatGPT Ads test at 5–10% of monthly spend. Write new copy for it rather than recycling Search headlines, point it at one or two strong pages, and give it 30 days before judging.
- Write down your break-even cost per lead. Without that number you cannot tell whether any new channel is working, and most owners we audit have never calculated it.
Frequently asked questions
Can Canadian businesses buy ChatGPT Ads yet?
Yes. Canada was part of the first multi-country expansion in April 2026, alongside Australia and New Zealand, and self-service access has since widened to more than 50 markets according to Digital Applied’s availability tracker. Access and suitability are different questions, though. Availability does not mean the channel will beat your current cost per lead, and for most local service businesses Google Search still delivers more measurable demand per dollar today.
Will ChatGPT Ads replace Google Ads?
Not on current evidence. The Graphite and Similarweb analysis covered by Search Engine Land on September 29, 2026 describes ChatGPT advertising as an incremental channel, with Google still carrying significantly more advertising volume. A $1 billion annualized run rate is meaningful growth for a channel under a year old, but it is small next to search. Treat it as an addition to the mix rather than a reallocation away from campaigns that are already profitable.
How much should a small business test on a new ad channel?
A useful rule is 5–10% of monthly ad spend, ring-fenced, for at least 30 days, with a single success metric agreed in advance. If you spend $3,000 a month, that is $150–$300 — enough to learn something, small enough that a failed test does not dent your lead flow. Never fund a test by cutting a campaign that is currently hitting your target cost per acquisition.
What is the single biggest Q4 mistake in Google Ads?
Raising budgets on top of broken measurement. Every October we see accounts where a form change or a site migration quietly killed conversion tracking months earlier, so Smart Bidding has been optimising towards nothing. Fix tracking first, confirm your Merchant Center feed is clean if you sell products, then scale. Spending more through a broken signal just buys worse decisions faster.
