Run Advantage+ when you have steady conversion volume and want Meta’s AI to find buyers for you. Run manual campaigns when your budget is small, your service area is tight, or you need control over who sees the ad. Most small businesses end up running both, split by objective rather than by preference.
What actually changed with Advantage+?
Advantage+ stopped being a separate campaign type and became the default structure. According to PPC Land’s reporting in October 2025 on Meta’s 8 October 2025 announcement, Meta folded Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns and Advantage+ App Campaigns into one unified Advantage+ structure, and version 24.0 of the Marketing API blocked the creation of new legacy campaigns, with full deprecation landing in version 25.0.
The practical part matters more than the API part. A campaign is treated as Advantage+ when three settings are all switched on at once: Advantage+ budget at the campaign level, Advantage+ audience, and Advantage+ placements. Turn on all three and the campaign flips into the Advantage+ state. Leave any one of them off and you are running what most people still call a manual campaign.
Does Advantage+ actually perform better?
Meta’s own figure says yes, and it is worth reading carefully. Meta reported that Advantage+ sales campaigns delivered a 22% average improvement in return on ad spend, cited in PPC Land’s October 2025 coverage. That is the platform’s own result, not an independent audit, and averages hide a lot: an e-commerce brand with thousands of monthly purchases is a very different case from a plumber running twelve leads a month.
Automation needs data to learn from. The fewer conversion events you send Meta each week, the longer the system spends guessing with your money. That is the honest reason so many small local accounts feel like Advantage+ burned through budget and gave them nothing.
Advantage+ or manual: which fits your business?
Match the setup to your conversion volume and how tightly you need to control targeting, not to what sounds most advanced.
| Factor | Advantage+ suits you | Manual suits you |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion volume | Steady weekly purchases or leads | Only a handful of conversions a week |
| Service area | National, or a wide metro | One suburb, one drive radius, one postal cluster |
| Offer | Catalogue, e-commerce, repeat purchase | One quote form, one booking, one high-ticket service |
| Creative supply | Several formats and angles ready to test | One or two proven ads |
| Exclusions | Few — happy for Meta to find the audience | Critical — must exclude existing customers or the wrong postal codes |
| Budget | Enough to clear the learning phase weekly | Tight monthly spend you cannot afford to donate to learning |
One structural note before you restructure anything: PPC Land reported that campaigns holding more than 50 ads per ad set cannot be duplicated through the API after the deprecation, though they remain editable, so bloated ad sets get harder to work with over time.
What else has Meta changed for small advertisers this month?
Two September 2026 changes are worth a small-business owner’s attention, neither of which requires you to rebuild anything.
Meta launched Meta One for Business on 15 September 2026, a tiered add-on subscription reported by Social Media Today as running from $14.99 to $499 per month. The tiers unlock competitor insights on Instagram, extended audience data history, and links in Instagram posts and Reels. For most owners spending a few thousand a month on ads, the entry tier is a cheap analytics upgrade and the upper tiers are a creator-economy product, not an advertising one.
Separately, Social Media Today reported on 21 September 2026 that Meta is decoupling Threads advertising from Instagram: businesses without an Instagram profile will be able to run Threads ads from a native Threads profile. The rollout is gradual. For a local service business this is a placement to watch, not a channel to fund this quarter.
How should you test Advantage+ without wasting a month’s budget?
Test it against your current best campaign, on the same objective, with real money on both sides — not by switching everything over on a Monday and hoping.
Keep your existing campaign running untouched. Build the Advantage+ version with the same offer and the same landing page, give it enough daily budget to reach a meaningful number of conversions in a week, and leave it alone for seven to fourteen days, because every edit restarts learning. Then compare cost per result, not click-through rate. Cheap traffic that does not book a job is the most expensive thing in a small ad account.
If you would rather not run that test on your own budget, this is the kind of account structure work our Meta Ads management team sets up daily.
What to do this week
- Open Ads Manager and check, campaign by campaign, which of the three Advantage+ controls — budget, audience, placements — are switched on. Write it down. Most owners are surprised by at least one.
- Count your conversion events over the last seven days. Under roughly a dozen a week, keep manual control of audience and spend your effort on the offer and the creative instead.
- Pick one campaign to test Advantage+ against, with the same offer and its own budget, and commit to leaving it alone for fourteen days.
- Check any ad set carrying more than 50 ads and trim it, so campaign duplication stays available to you later.
Frequently asked questions
Is Advantage+ better than manual Meta campaigns?
Not universally. Meta reported a 22% average improvement in return on ad spend for Advantage+ sales campaigns, cited in PPC Land’s October 2025 coverage, but that is an average across advertisers of every size and it is Meta’s own figure. Automation performs best when it has a steady stream of conversion events to learn from. A business generating a handful of leads a week usually gets steadier results keeping manual control of audience and placements while the offer and creative do the heavy lifting.
Can I still run manual Meta ad campaigns in 2026?
Yes. Manual control has not been removed. What changed is the default: Advantage+ became the unified campaign structure, and legacy Advantage+ Shopping and App campaign APIs were deprecated through Marketing API versions 24.0 and 25.0, per PPC Land’s October 2025 reporting. You can still choose your own audience, set ad set budgets, and pick placements by hand. Switching off any one of the three Advantage+ controls takes the campaign out of the Advantage+ state.
How much should a small business spend to test Advantage+?
Enough that the campaign can gather a meaningful number of conversions inside a week, rather than a fixed dollar figure. The number that matters is conversion events per week, not the budget itself, because the learning phase ends on events, not on spend. A $50 cost per lead and a $5 cost per lead need very different daily budgets to reach the same learning point. Work backwards from your own cost per result and be willing to leave the test alone for a full fortnight.
Do I need Meta One for Business to advertise on Facebook?
No. Meta One for Business, launched 15 September 2026 and reported by Social Media Today at $14.99 to $499 per month, is an optional add-on subscription. Ads Manager, campaign reporting, and every Advantage+ control remain available without it. The subscription adds things like Instagram competitor insights, extended audience data history, and links in Instagram posts and Reels. Treat it as an analytics and organic-content upgrade you may or may not want, not as a requirement for running ads.
